Trinity Church sent a team to assist in Samaritan’s Purse rebuilding efforts in Horry County (Myrtle Beach), South Carolina from December 1-6.
Devastating flooding along the Intercoastal Waterway, along with minor wind damage from Hurricane Florence in September 2018, caused wide spread damage. After 22 inches of rain, the county remained in flood stage for weeks and affected 1,500 to 2,000 homes.
Teams from Samaritan’s Purse arrived in October 2018 and mucked out over 200 homes; the “rebuild” project started in early 2019. Many people still have not been able to return to their homes and have struggled to find places to live.
Samaritan’s Purse efforts with rebuild have been to mechanically elevate or demolish existing homes and build new ones. In Horry County, Samaritan’s Purse has completed and dedicated 13 repair projects with three repair projects underway and three new rebuilds being worked on. Samaritan’s Purse plans to be actively involved in the rebuild effort in this area for at least another year.
The Trinity Church team stayed at the Timberlake Baptist Church in Myrtle Beach while they worked on two homes. The Smith house was approximately two weeks from being completed. Team members installed flooring, hung interior doors, installed trim, caulked and painted the interior of this home. The goal is to have the homeowners in their home by Christmas. The efforts of this team have made this goal possible.
The team also worked on a second home, the Cutler house. The Trinity team performed interior carpentry work, poured concrete, treated the house with a mold and mildew prevention solution, installed insulation and performed other minor repairs. This second house will be completed and dedicated by February 2020.
As we were being the “hands and feet of Jesus” focusing on the physical needs of the Horry County community, we also had time to minister to the spiritual needs of the homeowners. We listened to their stories about their experience during the flood, prayed with them and provided them with words of encouragement. As volunteers, from the week’s experience, we felt the transforming presence of the Lord in our lives and saw this transformation in the lives of those homeowners we encountered.
We will continue to pray and support the residents of Horry County and the staff of the Samaritan’s Purse organization located there, as it will be years before the physical and emotional devastation in this area will be resolved.
