Annual ‘Blessing of the Animals’ at Episcopal Church of the Holy Family
BY SCOTT ARMENTROUT
October 4 is the Feast Day for St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals and the founder of the Franciscan order. Every year on the Sunday closest to October 4, the Episcopal Church of the Holy Family on Griffith Road, Jasper, holds a special service for the blessing of animals that have accompanied their owners to the church. This year it was on October 6.
Held outside on the church grounds, this year’s group consisted of a number of dogs and cats, although in past years there have been chickens, goats, one ferret and a horse or two. Music was provided by the church “Wire Choir,” a stringed instrument group, and the Big Canoe Chapel Bell Ringers. All music was accompanied by a pair of singing canines who chimed in immediately at the first note of any music.
One cat, taken from its carrier to be blessed, became frightened and escaped the arms of its owner. With multiple people trying to round it up, the owner finally succeeded in getting it back in the carrier and bore the scratches to prove the event.
