IGA Market at Foothills recently participated in the Pickens Ferst Foundation for Childhood Literacy’s "Love of Literacy" Campaign. According to Sue Appleton, the chairperson of Pickens Ferst Foundation for Childhood Literacy, “We wish to extend a special thank you to the IGA Market at Foothills team and their customers for caring about Pickens FERST Foundation for Childhood Literacy and the free book program. With their support and the donations from their great customers, enough funds were raised to provide 750 age-appropriate books with literacy support materials to Pickens County children under the age of 5. We thank them for caring!”

The Pickens FERST Foundation for Childhood Literacy was founded in 2009 to prepare pre-school children for reading and learning success in school. The program encourages children to learn through reading and promotes parent/family involvement in preparing their children success in school.

Over 70% of all Pickens County children under the age of five participate in the program. Pickens FERST has mailed over 100,000 books since the program began in May, 2009. The books are mailed monthly free of charge to registered children from birth until five years of age. Any child under the age of five in the 30143 zip code is eligible to register for Pickens Ferst. Each child receives an age-appropriate book with literacy support materials for the parent.
