Ruth and John Herzer
Herzler Golden Wedding Anniversary
Long time Big Canoe residents Ruth and John Herzler celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on September 5.
The Herzlers both have their roots in the upper Midwest; Ruth in Jackson, Mich. and John in Berwyn Ill. but ended up in Big Canoe as their permanent home after many moves around the country.
After marriage in Lansing, Mich. in 1969, John reported for active duty aboard the USS Saratoga, spending most of the next three years at sea while Ruth followed from port to port raising their first child. After the navy came John’s career in the commercial insurance industry. During the ensuing 35 years, job assignments were primarily in sales and management that required many moves. During the same time Ruth held various positions as an elementary school teacher as well as a real estate broker.
In 2003 The Herzlers moved from Alpharetta, retired from their respective careers and began to enjoy Big Canoe and all it had to offer. John and Ruth’s two adult children and three grandchildren live within a 40-mile radius of Big Canoe.
What’s the secret to 50 years together? Both say “a lot of hard work. We’re not the same two people who married each other; we’ve grown up together. Because of that, we not only love and respect each other, we’re also best friends.”
