The Big Canoe community will pay tribute to America’s fallen warriors Monday, Memorial Day, May 27 at 10 a.m. at The Big Canoe Chapel.
Guest speaker will be U.S. Air Force veteran and author Pete Mecca. His topic will be “The Real Reason We Celebrate Memorial Day and Why We Must Continue to Do so.” Mecca is a member of the North Georgia Veterans and a previous guest speaker at their meeting. He served in Air Force Intelligence, including two and a half years in Vietnam. His full-page award-winning narrative, “A Veteran’s Story”, is featured in Georgia newspapers. He lectures and works as a consultant for TV, radio and patriotic events. Mecca also serves as commander of the prestigious Atlanta WWII Round Table.
As an author, Mecca’s book “Veterans: Stories from America’s Best” was published in April 2018 as the first in a series of 10-12 books featuring interviews with 400 plus veterans of all ranks, branches and conflicts. A separate project, “Fight Like a Girl” featuring female warriors past and present is near completion.
The Memorial Day program will include the North Georgia Veterans Chorus, flag ceremony, assisted by the Boy Scouts, and conclude with the playing of Taps.
