Big Canoe’s annual volunteer firefighter’s fundraiser kept its “over the top” promise. Three parachutists jumped from a helicopter at 5,000 feet above the Clubhouse at Lake Sconti landing on the golf course green.
Volunteer Firemen’s Fundraiser delivers
Ed note: Smoke Signals will run a full story on the Volunteer Firemen’s Fundraiser in its October issue.
The clubhouse trio of Jasmin Ilazovic, Executive Chef Hector Rosano, Chef Gerard Monte promised the Saturday, Sept 8 Volunteer Firemen’s Fundraiser would be “over the top”—and they delivered.
A spectacular landing by three parachutists—launching from a helicopter hovering 5,000 feet above the Clubhouse at Lake Sconti—with American flags flying set the tone for the most exciting event ever.
Two signature Cuban/Latin dinners—from master chefs Monte and Rosano—with Latin drinks received winning bids of $4,500 each at the live auction conducted by GM Jill Philmon who declared she has many talents but master of none.
This year’s proceeds from the fundraiser will go to buy furniture, fixtures and equipment for an Emergency Operations Center (EOC) for coordination of blizzards, thunderstorms, tornadoes, hailstorms, heat waves, droughts, wildfire, missing persons and any other emergency event in Big Canoe. A room above the new Station 3 was built for an EOC and now must be made operational.
All contributions for the Firemen’s Fund are tax-deductible (501 (c) (3) with checks made payable to “BCVFD” and placed in the postal facility “Big Canoe Volunteer Fire Dept.” box or mailed to 11564 Big Canoe, Jasper, GA 30143
Safe landing--Smoke Signals photographer Jim Francis, who captured the fundraisers’ exciting event, said, “The third parachutist had to circle south and came in for a landing over the cart barn and trees then dropped down over the green behind the clubhouse. The first parachutist whooshed in front of the crowd trailing smoke at 80 miles an hour. I was lucky to have a staff member’s wife explaining everything to me as it was happening. She said you can hear them as they come by you.”
