Big Canoe residents Adrianne Karterouliotis, Nina Karterouliotis, a family friend and Angelina Casey celebrate their successfully completion of the 2016 Big Canoe 5K Fun Run/Walk. The 3.1 hilly course winds through Big Canoe’s Wildcat Trail system.
Big Canoe’s colorful 5K Fun Run/Walk welcomes all
Although the summer temperatures are quickly rising, we hope you’ve been training and preparing to conquer the hills of Big Canoe. Families flock to Big Canoe during the week of July Fourth for the much beloved Fourth of July Family Day and the spectacular fireworks display over Lake Petit.
There’s more fun to be had. Make sure to begin the holiday a little early to participate in Big Canoe’s “colorful” Fun Run/Walk.
The fifth annual Big Canoe 5K Fun Run/Walk will add a new element of fun and surprise. Willing participants will have the option to run through color stations to make their all white attire burst with vibrant shades of blue, green, pink and red. It’s important to remember, the color stations are completely optional but who would want to miss out of creating an active rainbow while running through Big Canoe? If you participate in the color stations, make sure to bring a towel, sunglasses or eye protection, white shirt and shorts, and perhaps an extra pair of shoes. The Big Canoe POA will provide blowers and water hoses for rinsing.
The race will begin at 8 a.m., rain or shine, on Sunday, July 1. Runners, walkers and families are encouraged to participate; strollers are welcome. The cost of participation is $10 for runners ages 10 and over, $5 for children 9 and under.
The event will begin at the Wildcat Recreation Area and the course will wind through the Wildcat Trails. Previous participants will agree; the course is hilly, so take time now to prepare.
After all, it’s a road race in Big Canoe. Worried about completing the 3.1mile course? Don’t despair; the course will have a half mile return point marked so you’ll feel the accomplishment of successfully finishing a mile run/walk. The 5K Fun Run/Walk will not have official timekeeping but you may certainly keep your own time, if desired.
Registration forms can be found and submitted at the Big Canoe Fitness Center, Postal Facility, Canoe Lodge or Big Canoe POA’s website, bigcanopoa.org. Be sure to register prior to Sunday, June 18. After the deadline, t-shirts are not guaranteed. Need some cooling off after the race? All race finishers will be offered a $2 off coupon, good for use that day at the Big Canoe outdoor pools, either Wildcat or Swim Club.
Add this event to your calendar now and plan to spend a fun-and-fitness filled day in Big Canoe this July 1.
