Big Canoe Wellness Collaborative to host Volunteer Forum

BCWCLinda

Steering Committee Chair Linda Ricklef at Forum

On Friday, May 4, the Wellness Collaborative will host a volunteer forum from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Big Canoe Swim Club. The forums have been an integral part of the Wellness Collaborative since its inception. The meetings facilitate a dialog between the steering committee and the volunteers who deliver the services. Consequently, the volunteers are some of the best ambassadors for the collaborative and its services. While clients report that they are pleased with the services, feedback from the volunteers is critical to maintaining the quality of the programs.

The steering committee is headed by a chairperson and each service area–info., meals, visits, and rides. Each service area has a coordinator and backup who are experienced volunteers. The Wellness Collaborative guarantee that “no position is a lifetime commitment” attracts volunteers who will serve, then move on. Since the backups are available to cover for the coordinators, there is no 24/7 commitment.

Several Big Canoe residents have recently joined the steering committee. Kim Mullan has become the info backup; Diane LaCharite, meals coordinator; Melody Saunders, visits backup and Laura Larimore has signed on as administrator. Training sessions for new volunteers are scheduled throughout the year. For more information or to volunteer, visit https://www.bcwell.org/.

The Healthy Living Committee was established to improve the health and fitness of all residents by focusing on three areas, “The Three E’s”: Exercise, Eating, and Education. Bob Mackey coordinates the exercise efforts, which focuses on incorporating fitness stations onto the trails in Wildcat. Donna Dulfer coordinates the healthy eating team. A salad tasting is scheduled on Tuesday, May 9 at 3 p.m. in the Broyles Center. Five healthy salads, both main course and sides, will be available for tasting with recipes to take home. Participants can sign up on the list in the postal facility in the Wellness Collaborative box. A community dinner will feature a healthy dinner and dessert on Wednesday, June 27.

Linda Yeakel coordinates the education area and is working with a representative from Piedmont Hospital to host a series of monthly presentations related to brain health. The program scheduled on Thursday, June 21 is “What is Brain Health?” which will be followed by “Brain Health Activities” on Thursday, July 19. The final session on Thursday, August 16 will address “Brain Health and Nutrition.” All sessions will begin at 2 p.m. in the Clubhouse at Lake Sconti.
