1988 election history filmed on Steve Tate Highway

Drivers on Steve Tate Highway—just outside Big Canoe’s North Gate on Monday Oct. 30—had an unexpected preview of “The Front Runner,” a movie now being filmed in Georgia.

In the new movie Hugh Jackman plays candidate Senator Gary Hart (Colorado) , the then assumed 1988 Democratic presidential front runner. During the campaign there were rumors of an affair between Hart and Donna Rice, a campaign worker. At one point, Hart, claiming the stories about an affair were fake, challenged the press to follow him and see that there was nothing going on. The media took Hart up on the challenge that led to his downfall.

“The Front Runner” will adapt Matt Bai’s 2014 book, “All the Truth Is Out: The Week Politics Went Tabloid,” chronicling Hart’s rise and fall, according to “The Hollywood Reporter” website https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/first-hugh-jackman-gary-hart-photo-jason-reitmans-frontrunner-1041056 “Hart’s story marked a revolutionary moment in American politics and media, jump-starting the idea of personal imprudence as fair game in campaigns.”

Trucks and bus filming on Steve Tate

The filming on Steve Tate Highway featured an old Greyhound bus as the Hart campaign bus used to travel around New Hampshire in preparation for the primary there. According to NBC News reports, in May of 1987, just days before his resignation Hart told NBC News on his campaign bus that he welcomed media scrutiny.

One Big Canoe resident watching the bus scene commented she hoped none of the Georgia kudzu was showing since it was supposed to be set in New Hampshire.
