Aurora opens 22nd theater season with musical ‘Hunchback of Notre Dame’

Aurora Theatre in Lawrenceville opens its 22nd season July 20 to Aug. 27 with the Disney musical version of “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.”

In partnership with Theatrical Outfit, the show is based on Victor Hugo’s best-selling novel with songs from the Disney film. “Many know and love this story, whether from reading the novel or watching the film,” says show director Justin Anderson, associate artistic director at Aurora.

“At its heart, ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’ is a story of faith: a faith in something beyond us and the faith that we are each something bigger.”

A cast of 24 will take the audience into 1482 Paris, where the characters discover the true meaning of humanity.

The story traces the journey of Quasimodo, a deformed bell ringer in a cold cathedral tower who discovers his inner strength. His guardian Archdeacon Frollo is torn between his vows to the church and his obsession with the beautiful dancer Esmeralda.

Haden Rider stars as Quasimodo, and David DeVries – who plays Scrooge in the Alliance Theatre’s annual “A Christmas Carol” – is the conflicted Don Claude Frollo. Julissa Sabino has the lead role of Esmeralda, Kevin Harry plays Clopin Trouillefou and Lowery Brown is Captain Phoebus de Martin.

Performances are at 8 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and 2:30 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Tickets range from $30 to $65, with Tuesday discount matinee shows at 10 a.m. Aug. 1, 15 and 22 when ticket prices start at $20. Season tickets and group rates are also available at tickets.auroratheatre.com or 678-236-6222.

Located on the historic square in downtown Lawrenceville, Aurora has free attached covered parking.
