Petit Pete still eludes anglers at the Hook a Kid on Fishing Tournament

More than 100 young anglers attempted to catch the reclusive fish on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon but alas, Petit Pete still roams the depths of Lake Petit.

The annual Hook a Kid on Fishing Tournament and Blossman Propane, Gas and Appliance Open House proved a grand success with almost 500 guests attending both events. Adults and kids lined the banks of the lake searching for the perfect spot to drop a line and 29 fish were caught.

Madison King, 11, took home two grand prizes. She captured six fish, the most of any
angler, as well as the largest fish: a 24-ounce rainbow trout.

Madison King, 11, took home top honors with the most fish caught as well as the largest fish. Madison caught a 24-ounce rainbow trout before the final horn blew and received a trophy and a rod and reel courtesy of Paul Pattek. While Petit Pete remains free, one lucky fisherman received an Amazon Fire tablet as the grand prize. Davis Johnson, age 13, took home the top prize and his name will be engraved on the “I met the Challenge” plaque located at the Big Canoe Marina. The Petit Pete grand prize is graciously donated in memory of Joann Pattek.

To make this fishing tournament a success, volunteers meet months in advance to plan and organize sponsors, gather raffle prizes and streamline the registration process. The 2017 Hook a Kid on Fishing committee consisted of Paul Pattek, Garret Perez, Fran Holman-McKenzie, Lars McKenzie and Tom Greene. These committee members would also like to express their appreciation to the event volunteers: Pat and Linda Reed, Sharon Miller, John and Catherine Mann, Rita Van Fleet, Larry Deer, Will Jackson, Charles Pollard, Ken Nichols, Steve Wilson, Big Canoe Pack 20 Cub Scouts, Scott, Michele and the entire Parish family. These friendly volunteers serve a vital role in assisting in the details that make any event successful!

The Big Canoe Hook a Kid on Fishing Tournament is proudly sponsored by the Big Canoe POA, Smoke Signals, Big Canoe Marina, Mountain Vista Rentals, Blossman Propane, Gas & Appliance, Trout Unlimited, Cruise One Vacations, Renasant Bank, Squeaky Clean and Scott Parish Plumbing.
