Januweary

By Harris Green

The sky is iceberg blue.
The cold, pale sunlight
Shocks the gray, bare trees and
All the shadows hide.

The raw, bullying breezes
Rollick across the clearing and
Swagger through the woodlot and
The stark tree limbs tremble.

Amid the thin, rattling branches
A neckless gray sparrow shivers.
He squints against the windsting and
Sadly surveys the cornfield tundra.

The graverobber wind rouses the cornstalk mummies.
The rustling of the dry, brittle husks
Alerts the ever vigilant scarecrow
Who valiantly flaps his empty flannel arms and denim legs.

Unimpressed, the blowhard bully
Knocks his straw hat to the ground.
Hearthurt for the scarecrow and Januweary
The sparrow slowly closes his eyes and
Longs for spring.

Rollick across the clearing and

Swagger through the woodlot and

The stark tree limbs tremble.

Amid the thin, rattling branches

A neckless gray sparrow shivers.

The rustling of the dry, brittle husks

Alerts the ever vigilant scarecrow

Unimpressed, the blowhard bully

Knocks his straw hat to the ground.

Hearthurt for the scarecrow and Januweary

The sparrow slowly closes his eyes and

Longs for spring.
