Afghan items to benefit Afghanistan girls school on sale at Bears, Oh My!
aeachus@bigcanoenews.com Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow! But, please, not on the weekend of the ‘Love Goes ‘Round the World’ fundraiser! But snow it did on February 12–13 when Bears, Oh My! in Wolfscratch Village opened its doors to offer beautiful treasures from halfway around the world for sale. For the third consecutive year, store-owner Barb Maslyk helped sponsor ‘Love Goes ‘Round the World’ to benefit the girls’ school in Mohammad Agha village in Logar Province, Afghanistan—a school which Big Canoe’s own Lisa Schnellinger has been building since 2003. Not to worry, the sale will go on! The fundraiser will continue until all the Afghan items are sold. Lisa is now in Afghanistan teaching journalism, but when she returns in a few weeks, she will bring back even more treasures to showcase. There is a wide offering of handmade items for purchase at very reasonable prices. From Pashmina shawls to silk scarves, from reversible tote bags to beaded satin clutch purses, from natural soaps to Nuristan wooden carvings, there is truly something for everyone. Thanks to the contributions from Big Canoe and other friends, the Mohammad Agha school now has a beautiful new library. This year’s fundraising effort will buy books for that library. All proceeds from ‘Love Goes ‘Round the World’ will go for books and library supplies. Bears Oh My! is open from 10:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Stop by for an exotic trip halfway around the world! |
