Get in the "swing" for 2010 with MGA and WGA
—and the Jr. Golf Camps

Creek course from The Clubhouse on Lake Sconti in Big Canoe.

The holidays are over and it is time to get in the “swing” for 2010. We hope everyone got to spend that precious quality time with their families. I was fortunate enough to go to Texas to spend Christmas with my family. You don’t realize how fast time flies -- it had been 364 days since I had seen my family. Wow!

But, as soon as I arrived, it was like I had only been gone for hours. I was able to spend precious time with my family. (There wasn’t much choice as we had a blizzard the night I arrived with eight inches of snow and three foot drifts.) Each time I see my mother I realize even more how God graced the world with this special person. I’m blessed to have such a wonderful mother and family, job and community. I am thankful for this great time at Big Canoe and to share my love for my mother and family.

Sign up now for the Red Tee Open
Now it’s time to plan your 2010 golf calendar. First things first! The Red Tee Open! This is a pro shop event open to all male golfers with an established handicap. The guys will pull up their skirts and play from the red tees with 75 percent of their handicap. The format is three low net balls of the foursome.

The entry fee is $20 per player plus cart fee (or greens fee if applicable). You do not have to be a member of the Men’s Golf Association (MGA) or the golf amenity. The entry fee will cover the tournament, awards and food after the round. This is a fun and pressure-free event. Sign up early as this tournament fills up fast. If you don’t have a foursome, just call the Golf Pro Shop at (706) 268-3323 and we will be happy to hook you up.

Exciting MGA and WGA events all year
It is also time to join the MGA or the Women’s Golf Association (WGA). The MGA has many exciting competitive tournaments throughout the golf season including the Club Championship, MGA Member-Guest and the ever-exciting Rider Cup. Their first event is a welcoming reception at The Clubhouse on February 3.

The WGA sponsors several competitive events as well as Monday playdays for 18 and 9-hole groups. Look for WGA membership applications on the POA Web site or at the Golf Pro Shop. Opening Day for the MGA is March 19 and the WGA is April 5.

Four Junior Golf Camps will fill up fast
Registration is now open for the popular Junior Golf Camps of 2010. This year will definitely be the greatest year for professional instruction for the campers. The fee for 2010 is $200 per child and can be charged to your lot or paid by cash or check. The schedule of events is Tuesdays through Fridays from 8 a.m. to noon. Lunch is included every day.

The campers will receive professional instruction by our PGA and LPGA golf professionals in small groups rotating through six different stations including chipping, pitching, putting, sand, irons, fairway woods and driving. The groups will also receive on-course instruction and strategies. On Thursday of each week, the campers will go through a skills event for points and awards. On the final day of the camp, the adults are invited to play with their campers in a fun filled 9-hole event. This will give the campers their time to show off all they have done and learned during the week. After the 9-hole event, the campers and adults will gather for final awards, recognition and of course, lunch. There are four camps: Camp 1 is June 15-18; Camp 2 is June 29- July 2; Camp 3 is July 13-16 and Camp 4 is July 27-30. Do not delay as these camps fill up early every year.

Couples Twilight is another great time for our property owners to get together for some fun evening golf on Friday nights. These events are once a month with a shotgun start at 4:30 p.m. and dinner following play. The cost of the event is $29 which includes golf, prizes and dinner at The Clubhouse. Signup sheets are available in the Golf Pro Shop one week in advance of the event. The first Twilight Couple’s event is scheduled for March 26.
