By Linda Hunt Each year brings changes and transitions. 2009 was no exception. We crowned new champions, formed new friendships and golf partners, played our career rounds of golf and lost loved ones we adored and respected.
Last year brought us a new Men’s Club Champion and a dual winner as Senior Club Champion. Bill Kinney got past all the other male golf talents and distractions of his daughter’s wedding to win both events. Our Women’s 18 Hole Club Champion is an ol’ favorite, Donnie Faucette. I believe records show this being Donnie’s fifth Club Championship victory at Big Canoe. New blood won the Couples Club Championship in 2009 with Jean “The Dominatrix” and Mike “The Dominator” Domanik.
The year 2009 also brought new Member-Guest Champions, David Sharp and guest Jan Lok in the most successful event in the history of Big Canoe. With a send-off of the Shrimp Fest by Big Canoe Food and Beverage on the upper putting green, to a feast at the closing ceremonies, Member-Guest has never been so special. Congratulations to all who worked to make it such a success. Also the MGA crowned new champions at the Spring Member-Member and the Fall Member-Member, David Keller/Jim Baumgartner and James Carter/Ken Rife respectively. The 19-Man Shootout Champion was our 2009 MGA president Wally Walsh and our women’s own version of the 19-Man – the WGA Shootout, went to Tudi Sprague.
Successful ladies events included The Rally for the Cure and Diva Day. The Rally, spearheaded by Kathy Rossetti and her committee, raised almost $4000 for the Susan G. Komen Cancer fund. Diva Day, hosted by Callaway Golf, brought the ladies out wearing their finest attire to enjoy camaraderie and competition. Callaway Golf introduced their new Diva golf ball developed specifically for a woman’s game. Callaway Golf, a fabulous supporter of women’s golf and Big Canoe, outdid themselves with fun, prizes, contests and lunch for our lady golfers of every level.
Finally, a new golf group was formed called the Learning Ladies. This enthusiastic group of ladies has taken on the daunting challenge of learning the game of golf. With the help of our golf professional staff lead by former LPGA Tour player Joan Delk, the ladies have made new friends while becoming avid golfers. Each Wednesday at 10:00 a.m., the ladies attend a one-hour clinic followed by an hour on course instruction and finally lunch for only $25. Look for more group instruction in 2010. The icing on the cake was the new golf professional staff. Mark Johnson, director of golf, and Joe Finemore, first assistant golf professional, came on board in September to round out an exceptional golf staff at Big Canoe. Linda Hunt, head golf professional, and Trish McCarthy, merchandise manager, along with the rest of the golf staff, say kudos to the search committee on choosing such great talents. Certainly 2010 will be a year of great golf and success with these talented additions. |
