It really is In Our Hands

On Sunday, Feb 7, a $140 million ad campaign promoting the 2010 census will kick off during the Super Bowl. To prepare for the count locally, census workers recently came to the POA office bearing posters, “It’s in Your Hands” logoed cloth bags, coffee mugs, and colored fact kits.

The only problem seems to be the 2010 census really is in our hands. The census bureau can’t figure out exactly how to count Big Canoe residents.

The 2010 census, mandated every 10 years by the U.S. Constitution, will be the first since the 9/11 terror attack and is an attempt to count every legal and illegal person in the US. This undertaking will begin in March and help the federal government dole out $400 billion a year in federal funds. It will also be used to help redraw local, state and congressional districts among other things.

Federal funds are at stake
Bottom line: The more people who are counted, the more federal funds we receive. And Georgia, with its growth, is one of the states expected to get additional representation in the House of Representatives. But how to count the population of this gated community of full time, weekenders and some timers and get it right?

First census workers thought they would mail the census forms to lot numbers. Debbie Pickett, POA director of administrative services, who is coordinating the Big Canoe count with U.S. Census officials, told the Gainesville census office personnel the forms would never be received that way. We have a postal facility for mail with box numbers. Then they considered placing census workers in the postal facility to hand out forms.

Not responding is costly

If 36 percent of all forms are not returned, census people say workers may have to visit 47 million homes at an additional cost of $3 billion but visitation won’t work in Big Canoe. One challenge nationwide is there are about 25 million more people and 15 million more addresses in this country than there were in 2000. Then there are the foreclosures, rising identity thefts and mistrust of the government to contend with nationwide.

However, right here in Big Canoe the main problem seems to be how to count? It may have been easier in Biblical times.
