New-to-Big Canoe family thanks neighbors, AmeriGas Print E-mail

To the Editor:
My wife and I (along with our now 15 month old twins!) are new Big Canoe residents and wanted to relate our experience during the recent snow and ice in hopes of saving another family from a crazy weekend like we had.

Our home is heated with propane and I had the tanks filled in late November, but have not checked the level as often as I should, having never used propane to heat a home before.

Big mistake!

During Friday night of that snow, ice, and some of the coldest weather we have experienced, we ran out of propane (and our fireplaces are also propane!)! Thank goodness we had several floor heaters, but it was cold, cold in the house when we awoke Saturday morning!

We buy our gas through AmeriGas, and I called them to explain our situation and see when we could get propane. The gentleman I spoke with was very helpful and thorough but said it would be at least Sunday before a truck could deliver the propane, so we hunkered down for another winter slumber party on Saturday night.

Our good neighbors checked on us numerous times and let us borrow another floor heater, but it was still cold!

Thankfully, Sunday came and we were looking forward to getting heat, but the roads were still hazardous. However, AmeriGas brought in a smaller truck with four tanks to get us through until they could get a big truck in to refill completely.

We just wanted to say thanks to AmeriGas for going the extra mile and to remind residents (especially new ones like us not used to using a propane tank) to keep the levels checked. It was a “kinda” fun adventure, but next time I think we will be prepared.

Much thanks to AmeriGas and our new friends in Big Canoe—David, Carlene, Pam, Barbara, Fred, Sandy, and Walt!
