HOA board reviews ways to better serve community Print E-mail
HOA Presidents letter

This year will bring many changes and improvements for our HOA members. In January, we held two work sessions in addition to our regular monthly meeting. The purpose of these workshops was to review the entire organization of the HOA board: its structure, its mission statement, and its goals and objectives.

Since the inception of the Big Canoe Homeowners Association we have evolved from a community centered organization to one that is involved outside as well as inside our gates. The evolution has required us to review all aspects of our organization.

One example of this evolution is exemplified by the transformation of Smoke Signals. In its beginning it was primarily a community news letter. Now it is a full fledged news organization. Smoke Signals Online was introduced and has become a major source for timely news.

We brought ad sales, layout, and design — which had been outsourced — in-house. This was a major development. We are also contemplating future growth in this operation. The sales staff has performed beyond all expectations. The design and layout staff has improved the appearance. In addition to our editorial and reporting staff, we have a large group of contribution writers.

Everyone involved has made tremendous contributions to the success of Smoke Signals and we expect more improvements in 2010. We are looking at different ways to add services and quality to our existing product for our members and the entire community.
The next most obvious transformation on the HOA board is the expansion in importance of one of our directorships: Liaison. This director is responsible for relationships with the public officials in matters that could affect our lifestyle in Big Canoe.

The Fire Station # 6 voting precinct issue and the Atlanta Motorsports Park issue are examples of the necessity of working with elements outside our community. As we grow there will be more and more issues that will require our participation in external issues.
A current example is an issue in Dawson County where the Board of Commissioners is looking at regulations on short term rental property. Through its liaison director the HOA will be watching this closely.

These are just two examples of the expanding role of the HOA in our community. There will be many more and we need to plan for those changes now. As always, we rely on input from our members and we welcome your suggestions. Please contact any of your elected directors if you wish to contribute.
