It was a hand-clapping, foot-stomping good time at the Club Sunday night, all to the bluegrass music of the Steep Canyon Rangers, the award winning Chapel Hill group of amateurs turned pro to rave reviews.
Fans of the high, lonesome bluegrass sounds were not disappointed. The
program included One Dime at a Time, which won early recognition for
the group, and Be Still Moses.
For the old timers, it brought back memories of Bill Monroe and his
bluegrass sounds, but with a faster beat and more action going on
banjo, mandolin, guitar and especially the aggressive playing of
Charles Humphreys on the bass.
Humphreys also served as the emcee for the group with entertaining and
wry-humored introductions of the band members and music numbers.
Add to that the energetic fiddle music of talented Nicky Sanders,
playing with lightning-speed fingers and bow and with an incredible
range of notes. He was a crowd-pleaser, coming back for the encore
piece and getting a standing ovation from an appreciative audience.
The program was sponsored by the HOA with Director Carolyn Littell in
charge of the activity. Some 130 residents attended the show. Bill
Rawson opened the program, introducing the band and giving a brief
history of bluegrass music.
