Big Canoe group enjoys weekend getaway
Alex, Dick, Alan and Jim with their big catches
Alex, Dick, Alan and Jim with their big catches

By Bennett Whipple
Ordinarily this would sound like just another “fish story,” but knowing the parties involved, I wouldn’t have been a doubter like some were.

The story involves a group from Big Canoe who enjoy getting away from the Reservation annually for a social/golf outing at some nearby venue.

This year they picked the Richard B. Russell State Park near Elberton. Because of the location, four of the guys--Alex Chesnut, Al Goodman, Jim Leonard and Dick Girdler--thought it would be a good idea to add a fish fry to the festivities for the group of eight couples attending the event.

So the four guys left early, of course, to do the fishing. Their departure was not without much derision from the rest of the group and the suggestion that they find an Elberton fish market as a back-up source for the fish to fry.

Leaving at noon Sunday (after Chapel, of course), Alex, Al, Jim and Dick arrived to fish that evening, catching 17 Striper Bass and Hybrid Bass weighing 3 to 8 pounds. Fishing again on Monday morning, the Group caught another nine fish with Alex landing a 23-pound Striper, and Jim an 8-pound Large Mouth Bass. Also added to the catch were Crappie, smaller stripers and hybrids.

Being modest fellows, they acknowledged the major contribution of their guides Capt. William Jabour and his son, Will Jabour, and Wendell Wilson. If any Big Canoers are interested in trying their luck, go to William’s web site at http://fisher-o-men.com/ and get the ideal times to fish Hartwell, Russell and Clarks Hill lakes.

The doubters, including wives Regina Chesnut, Barbara Goodman, Sue Leonard and Pat Girdler, and non-fishing couples Nancy and Lewis Cowart, Kay and Wayne Page, Jane and Bud Ison and Nan and Fred Shaw, not only ate fish in bounteous quantities, but a little crow, too. (Dick Girdler contributed to this article.)
