By Jeremiah Boswell After an abundance of travel, I arrived in Sliven, Bulgaria
anxious to settle into my bed. However, on the way to the apartment, my
American teammate and roommate, Larry, shared with me that another player was staying in my room. The team was trying to find him an apartment, but for now my pillow was his pillow.

I reluctantly accepted, (sensing I didn't really have a
choice) meaning I would sleep on the couch for my first night back. What Larry
didn't tell me was that the squatter was deeply in love with a girl in Sofia. Of course that is
of little importance unless you're trying to sleep on the pullout couch right
next to my/his room.
That night, the lovers' phone conversation went through all
possible emotions...tears, silence (not enough) and laughs. At 3:00 a.m. they
decided to start playing the "no, YOU hang up first" game. After several back
and forths, they brilliantly decided to hang up at the same time. Of course
this naturally proceeded to "1...2...3...Why didn't you hang up?!" Luckily, after the
"1...2...2.5..." portion of the game, someone liked someone else a little less and
hung up.
The award winning Steep Canyon Rangers play to a standing ovation at the Club.
By Bennett Whipple
It was a hand-clapping, foot-stomping good time at the Club Sunday night, all to the bluegrass music of the Steep Canyon Rangers, the award winning Chapel Hill group of amateurs turned pro to rave reviews.
There are not many musical venues north of Atlanta that present artists of a comparable quality as the artists in the city. An exception to this is the series of jazz performances sponsored by The Arts Council of Gainesville. Once a month from October through May, except December, top notch members of the jazz community perform.
You might ask, "Why would I go there instead of Atlanta? The commute to Gainesville is nearly as long." I'll answer the question by telling you why Nancy and I have been season ticket holders for more then a half dozen years: The price of a ticket is 25 dollars not 50. The trip may take the same amount of time but the traffic is light on Friday or Saturday nights. The parking is free and close. The venue accommodates about a hundred people not several thousand like the Fox Theatre or about a thousand like Symphony Hall. It's BYOB. They provide set-ups, glasses, soft drinks, snacks etc. Gainesville has several good restaurants-Rudolph's and Scotts on the Square, to pick two-or stop at the Blue Bicycle on the way. Most of all, the audience is friendly and quiet.
